A care home in Staffordshire is celebrating after providing 50 years of care to people living with dementia.

Meadowyrthe, which is part of Accord Housing Association and based in Tamworth celebrated its 50th birthday last week with an event for residents, their family and friends and staff, as well as the local community. The event included a live singer, afternoon tea and a raffle, where £321 was raised and will go towards the Meadowyrthe Comforts Fund.

The care home was opened on March 25, 1969 by the Vice Chair of Staffordshire County Council at the time; Frederick Joseph Oxford Esq. One member of staff has 30 years of service at the home, and another with 25 years.

Michelle Barker, Head of Residential and Nursing Care Services at Accord said: “It is fantastic to be celebrating 50 years of Meadowyrthe, as it continues to provide specialist dementia care to people within the local community. Meadowyrthe is a wonderful place to live and work, we have one customer who has been with us since 2004 and two members of staff who have been working here for a combined total of 55 years.

“Everyone had a great day celebrating our 50th year with residents, their family and friends and staff, with lots of entertainment and activities taking place throughout the day. I am so proud of the team at Meadowyrthe, and I hope they continue to provide excellent care for many years to come.”

Meadowyrthe caters for up to 41 adults over the age of 65 who live with dementia, including 10 respite beds for planned or emergency use. During its last CQC inspection in 2017 Meadowyrthe was rated Good overall.

Meadowyrthe is one of three dementia residential care services which transferred from the management of Staffordshire County Council to Accord in 2015. All three services form part of the innovative partnership between the Council, Accord and ENgie to develop three state of the art Dementia Centres of Excellence, the first of which, Amber Wood, opened in Burton in December 2018.
